They are: liquid detergent, a spray bottle, protective gloves, a mild abrasive cleaning product, and a scrubber, brush or sponge. The second step is to make a bathtub cleaner. A simple recipe to use is 1 cup of liquid detergent and 3 cups of hot water. The third step is to make sure you remove all items that are in or on your tub (i.e. shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razors, etc.). Now you can clean your bathtub.

The first step in cleaning your bathtub is to wet the bathtub down with water. Then apply the bathtub cleaner. The second step is to scrub the dirty areas of your tub (with the scrubber). The third step is to let the cleaner sit for 10 minutes. The fourth step is to scrub the dirty area again (dirt should all come off). Remember to apply water to scrubbed areas so you know what you have already cleaned. The final step is to rinse the tub. Generally, you should clean your bathtub about every six weeks.

Tips & Takeaways

For the process above, liquid detergents such as Palmolive or Dawn Dishwashing Liquid can be used to make your bathtub cleaner.

There are ways of keeping your bathtub, or shower stall, cleaner for longer. One way is to wipe up excess water. This will help prevent water stains which, in return, helps prevent soap scum and oily grime build up. Another way of prolonging your cleaning duties is to use a wax polish. A wax polish, like gel gloss will help water bead and roll off  applied areas so no hard water stains will form, thus preventing dirt and mildew from forming.

There are many ways to avoid soap scum build up. A preventative way of doing so is to use a liquid gel soap, instead of a bar soap. Your bar soap contains talc which, when combined with your body oil, creates a cement-like substance that is hard to clean.

If you do get soap scum, there are many commercial cleaners out there to choose from. Your automatic dishwater detergent works well too. Baking soda and water paste, or white vinegar are natural cleaners you can use. If your soap scum build up becomes severe, you can use a stronger alkaline degreaser.

When cleaning hard water spots and mineral deposits there is a simple recipe you can use. Mix 3/4 cup of automatic dishwasher detergent to 1 gallon of water. Sponge the solution on and give it 15 minutes to set. Make sure surface is wet. Scrub with brush. Rinse and dry. Repeat, if necessary.
